DEFINITIONS
Some things that are needed to understand our story.
MISOGYNY
This word comes up a lot here and for good reason. Misogyny is the dislike or even hatred of women. The concept almost always overlaps with the idea of sexism, or the idea that women are inferior to men in a social, mental, and physical sense.
RACISM
This is a word that comes up often in the media or the news. Is refers to the discrimination of races or ethnic groups because of their culture, their accent, etc. and the idea that certain races are superior than others.
WOC/BIPOC
These both have very important meanings here and in the world. Being a WOC means that you are a Woman of Colour. BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, People of colour. Both of these definitions have no exceptions as long as you respect everyone in these communities.
MISOGYNOIR
Misogynoir is misogyny towards black women where race and gender are both involved in the discrimination. Examples include the hypersexualization of black women, colourism based on sex appeal against darker skinned black women, and black women being seen as “ratchet” or “loud” when speaking out.
